The Real Cause of Stretch Marks (AND How To Avoid Them)

Even if your mother's and grandmother's skin were filled with stretch marks, your future is far from predestined. You have enough opportunity to change your skin's outlook thanks to the discovery that less than optimal nutrition causes stretch marks. It is mostly a myth that stretch marks are hereditary.

Poor nutrition delivery to the skin causes it to breakdown easily. This "less than optimal" nutrition cause mentioned is not just due to a person's diet, so don't scold anybody. This also happens due to stress, poor circulation, and blood stagnation.

Let's take a closer look at these causes so we can learn specific ways to avoid stretch marks.

Nutrition and Supplements

Vitamins A, B6, and C, plus minerals silica, zinc, and manganese are the main nutrients needed for collagen and elastin production. It makes sense to supplement with these during high stress times. In order for these nutrients to be effective, they should be taken with a complete vitamin and mineral formula supplement.

A diet high in fatty meats, flour, and sugar is the easy route to getting stretch marks at a younger age because it gives you poor nutritional intake. It is not advisable to go on a strict diet, but rather to eat as many natural foods including lean meats, fruits, vegetables, and nuts. The fiber found in fruits and vegetables slows down sugar absorption, giving your body time to process the sugar without causing a spike in blood glucose levels. Processed foods are the worst offenders and contain flour and sugar. Also found in processed foods, cookies, sauces, cereals, and drinks is the hidden sugar high fructose corn syrup.

Foods that interfere with collagen repair include vegetables from the nightshade family. These are potatoes, eggplant, tomatoes, and green peppers. Tobacco intereferes with collagen repair as well.

Stress

Stress causes the destruction of protein which is necessary for skin health. Your skin is composed of 98% protein. Collagen and elastin are the major structural proteins of the skin. High levels of the stress hormone cortisol break down collagen and elastin faster than your body can replace them. Stress ages the skin prematurely and that is precisely when stretch marks and wrinkles form.

Now that you know stress is a culprit in your outer appearance and the formation of stretch marks, find solutions to your inner conflicts. These tend to occur when your heart tell you one thing and your head tells you another. Or, when you have two opposing opinions on what you should do. Simply, go with one of your choices and support yourself with reasons why it is good for you and everybody involved.

Circulation - Exercise

Poor circulation and blood stagnation from lack of exercise, a poor diet, and constipation, causes the skin to receive less nutrients and become less elastic. The skin then tears and becomes dry easily. The only solution here is for you to exercise. Make it fun by playing a favorite sport, dancing, taking a walk, or simply stretching.
